CLOSE TO GOD

Kino Anders' Easter Cult.

Doors open 20h.

20h15, USA 1976 92min.

The storyline of this movie involves a series of motiveless murders committed by various New York residents: a sniper shoots people from a water tower; a father murders his entire family; and a cop opens fire during a St. Patrick's Day parade. The only consistent pattern to the crimes involves the perpetrators calm admissions of guilt, explaining, "God told me to." While investigating the murders, catholic police detective Peter Nicholas is increasingly troubled by evidence of a Christ-like figure named Bernard Phillips who appeared to each of the killers and can't seem to shake the feeling that his own fate is somewhat linked to this mysterious being. As he comes closer to the truth, his worst fears are confirmed.
One of Kino Anders favorite US thrillers from the seventies.

21h50, Mexico 1972 90min.

A tragic celestial western that explores a surrealist point of view of the lost paradise by Adam and Eve.' Directed by Rafael Corkidi, Jodorowsky's cinematographer, this film is somewhat obscure. Rafael Corkidi counts as one of the most important mexican directors in the 70ies and 80ies but his movies are really hard to get or still lost.

Violent Animation

Doors open 20h.

Film start 20h15.

Before and after "Princess" we show RUSSIAN ANIMATION about war and conflicts (screens below) and MORE.

20h45, Denmark 2006, 90 min, with english subs

Princess is a 2006 adult-themed Danish animated film directed by Anders Morgenthaler and co-written by Morgenthaler and Mette Heeno. The film tells the harsh story of a 32-year old missionary named August whose sister, a former porn star nicknamed "The Princess," has died of drug abuse and left behind her 5-year old daughter. August adopts the child and they embark on a violent mission of vengeance to destroy all existing pornographic material featuring Princess.

When 'Waltz with Bashir' almost got the Oscar prize for best foreign-language movie I did not know that it has a precursor in using animation to pass a very serious message. 'Princess' reminds from many points of view the Israeli movie, and even has some very similar looks. In a mix of animation and amateur movies filmed with hand-held camera it tells a story that would be too disturbing to be made with actors.

SUPPRESSED ART

Kino Anders' first doc feature.

Doors open 20h.

20h15: UK 2008, 60min. no subs

Motor City's Burning: Detroit from Motown to the Stooges tells the musical story of Detroit in the 60s. It boasts an impressive soundtrack, extensive archive footage and contributions from top names of the time.

In 1967 the biggest riot in American history erupted on the streets of Detroit, but the riot wasn't the only revolution going on - the 60s would see Detroit create music that would change the world. In the early 60s an aspirational record label would transcend Detroit's inner city to take black music to a national audience. And in the late 60s a group of suburban kids would descend into the inner city to create revolutionary rock that expressed the rage of young, white America.

With contributions from Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, George Clinton, Martha Reeves, John Sinclair and the MC5 and many others.

21h30: 2010 USA, 80 min. english, russian (subtitled)

The Desert of Forbidden Art is a sweeping look at decades of Soviet repression of the arts and Igor Savitsky's one man campaign to rescue 40,000 works of banned politically volatile artists. In complete defiance of the regime, he creates in a remote desert of Uzbekistan one of the most important collections of Russian art.

The love for art has rarely been so well represented in a documentary, not to mention that the actual works of art are absolutely stunning.
This amazing story, with characters as wild and bizarre and wonderful as any you'll see in any flick, is terrifying, heartwarming, funny, and hugely human. Even if you're not an art-lover, this tale tells so much about our times, there's no way to not be moved.

After the two movies we show some russian animations in memento of the featured artists.

A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman

A Liars Autobiography is a celebration of the life of the elusive and eccentric Graham Chapman. The film is narrated by Chapman himself (he had recorded audio tapes of his memoirs) and the animation alone is a visual feast. It varies in style which suggests that aside from the obvious comedy, the film is much more perceptive and sophisticated than on first glance.

21h50: USA 1999, 100 min.

"Breakfast of Champions" successfully brings Vonnegut's bizarre, abstract writing style to life. Of course, it would be impossible to incorporate all of the odd elements of the novel into a film that is only 2 hours long, but, surprisingly, this movie nails just about all of them. In a hybrid between "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Cadillac Man," this film captivates the audience from the moment Vonnegut's illustrations accent the opening credits to the extremely twisted ending. The entire cast puts on an unbelievable show, especially Bruce Willis, who gives the comedic performance of his lifetime as Dwayne Hoover. Fantastic filming combines with Vonnegut's ideas to weave the seamless tapestry of insanity that is "Breakfast of Champions."
